When I was asked at age 6 what I wanted to be when I grew up, unflinchingly I replied, ‘A teacher.’ And if I was asked the same question at age 16, I would have confidently responded, "A writer!" In another decade I had made up my mind -- I wanted to be a bit of both.
While writing gave me the opportunity to express my creativity, teaching nourished my soul by allowing me to connect with my students. Thus, creativity and connection formed the two pillars of my professional pursuits. In my own teaching practice, I have observed how creativity has narrowed the gap between educators and learners, particularly with young learners who are so responsive to play and performance.
Watching my students slowly make meaning of words and the world around them has been deeply gratifying. Now in my eighth year of teaching, I still feel I have just begun. As I write this in early 2023, I’m buzzing with ideas and possibilities. Along with working full-time as an educator, I'm on my way to release my first picture book, Full of Happy.
